SUMMARYTHE EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT RUNNING VELOCITIES ON ERYTHROCYTEDEFORMABILITY AND AGGREGATION IN RATSDr. Ayça Topçu, DEÜTF Fizyoloji AD, İZMİRContent of the plasma and properties of the blood cells, especially erythrocytes play animportant role in fluidity of the blood in adequate blood supply. It was reported that acuteexercise affects structure, function and chemistry of the erythrocytes. In the present study, theeffect of different running velocities on erythrocyte deformability and aggregation and therole of lactate and oxidant stress in rats were investigated.Thirty-two adult male Wistar Albino rats were used in the study. Rats were dividedinto 4 running groups and a control group. Running speeds were 10, 15, 20, and 25 m/min.Following a one-hour run, rats were sacrificed. Erytrocyte deformability and aggregation, plasma lactate, SH and erytrocyte MDA levels were investigated. Results were analysed byone way ANOVA and post-hoc Kruskal-Wallis.Erytrocyte deformability decreased significantly in rats that runned in 10 and 15m/min velocities. There were no significant difference in aggregation. Lactate levels ofrunning groups were significantly higher than those of controls (P<0.01). Lactate rise wasproportional to the running velocity. SH levels of the exercise groups were higher than thoseof controls. No siginificant change were observed in MDA levels in running groups.Consequently, erythrocyte deformability was decreased after the exercise. Erythrocyteaggregation did not change in the running groups. Lactate levels were significantly rised andthey had a negative correlation with erythtocyte deformability. MDA levels were not differentamong groups.Key words: exercise, hemorheology, oxidant stress, lactate
