Abstract (EN)

When examining the energy sector in light of industrial growth and technological developments today, it is seen that investments are always aimed at meeting the increasing energy demand. With the growing population, the reality emerges that more electrical energy is needed in terms of energy management. Attempting to meet this energy requirement solely from fossil fuels leads to the depletion of limited resources on earth and an increase in climate change. When viewed in the context of renewable energy sources and smart grids, Energy Storage Technologies (EST) are of great importance for the electrical grid. Energy storage technologies support the electrical grid by providing flexibility and balancing for renewable energy sources, which offer unreliable and intermittent power supply. Additionally, they are critically important in supporting the grid alongside the main power sources. This study sheds light on the advantages offered by energy storage technologies, which play an effective role in solving problems encountered during the grid integration of renewable energy sources in smart grid applications. In this thesis, different solutions offered by battery energy storage technologies are also evaluated. This study aims to explain the applications of energy storage systems at the grid level and to propose a methodology for selecting the appropriate energy storage technology for these applications. In this thesis, a 2MW/968kWh lithium-ion battery grid-connected energy storage system is introduced. A battery energy storage system model with bidirectional constant power control (P/Q) mode has been developed and analyzed in MATLAB/Simulink, thus providing bidirectional constant power control to the grid.
