Investigation of relationship between level of percieved social support and academic success on the students of Seyrantepe secondary school

Abstract (EN)

The purpTose of the present study is to investigate the relationship between the social support, the 6, 7 and 8th grades students perceive and their academic achievements. Furthermore, it investigates whether perceived family support, perceived peer or perceived teacher support, predict or don't predict sources of social support. If so, which of them predict and their degree. The group of study consists of 139 students (67 female and 72 male) studying at Seyrantepe Secondary School connected to Ministry of Education, in Kağıthane, İstanbul, in 2015-2016 education year. The age of the students ranges between 12 and 15. The data in this investigation was gathered by using the revision of the scale of the Perceived Social Support (PSSS-R) and Personal Information Form. The data found in the present study was analyzed by using SPSS 21.0 program. The findings of the study show that the perceived social support and perceived teacher support of 6, 7 and 8th grades students predict their academic achievement significantly. Inotherwords, when the level of the social support, the students perceive and the level of the social support they perceive from their teachers increase, their academic achievement increases, too. Besides, relationships were found between the education level of mothers and perceived social support, perceived family support and perceived peer support; the number of siblings and perceived social support and perceived peer support. The findings were discussed according to literature and suggestions were presented for the researchers in the future.
