Evaluation of nicotine addiction with the smoking cessation fatigue scale

Abstract (EN)
Smoking is one of the most important causes of preventable morbidity and mortality worldwide. A wide range methods have been developed to assist patients in the smoking cessation process. In our study, we aimed to investigate the smoking cessation status of the patients who applied to Bursa Uludağ University Faculty of Medicine, Family Practice Outpatient Clinic for Smoking Cessation, and the factors affecting them using the Smoking Cessation Fatigue Scale. The study was conducted with a concentric, cross-sectional and face-to face survey method, and volunteers aged 18 and over who applied to Bursa Uludağ University Faculty of Medicine Family Medicine Smoking Cessation Polyclinic between September 2020 and February 2021 were included. Sociodemographic information form, Fagerström Nicotine Dependence Test, Smoking Cessation Fatigue Scale and HAD Scale were used in the study. The age of the study group varies between 20 and 75 and consists of a total of 358 people, 119 of them (33.2%) are women and 239 of them (66.8%) are men. 150 people (44.9%) who participated in the study quitted smoking in the third month, and 131 people (39.5%) quitted smoking in the sixth month. A relationship was found between the smoking cessation status of the participants, their previous attempts to quit smoking, the average monthly expenditure on cigarettes, and the age at which they first tried smoking. A significant correlation was found between HAD anxiety and depression scores and quitting status. A correlation was determined between the emotionality sub-dimension of the SCFS (Smoking Cessation Fatigue Scale) and HAD depression and anxiety scores.vii Further studies are required to comprehend the relationship between smoking cessation fatigue, stress, and quitting status. In the treatment of smoking cessation, it is very important to evaluate the patient in a holistic manner, to choose a personalized motivational interview and treatment method to increase the success of quitting.
