Abstract (EN)
The research was planned and implemented as a descriptive study to determine sleep quality and fatigue levels in smokers and non-smokers. The research was conducted between 1 July - 1 November 2022, who applied to Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa Cardiology Institute, Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine, Department of Chest Diseases, Department of Internal Medicine and General Internal Medicine outpatient clinics, who met the research criteria and accepted the research. It was carried out with 384 individuals, whose written and verbal consent was obtained. To collect the data, it was carried out by the researcher in the form of questions and answers after obtaining consent from the individual between the ages of 18-65 by face-to-face interview. "Patient Information Form", "Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)", "Epworth Sleepiness Scale (EUS)", "Chalder Fatigue Scale" were used to collect the data of the study. The data were evaluated with the computer SPSS 22.0 statistical program. The sleep quality score of the individuals was found to be x̄=7,177 in smokers and x̄=5,771 in non-smokers. Smoking status of the participants was significantly correlated with sleep quality (X2=13,719; p=0,001<0.05). Regression analysis to determine the cause and effect relationship between sleep quality, sleepiness and fatigue was significant (F=41,361; p=0,000<0.05). It was concluded that sleep quality increased the total fatigue level in smokers (ß=0.422) and sleepiness increased the total fatigue level (ß=0.257). According to the results of this study, smoking reduces sleep quality. It was determined that the decrease in sleep quality caused an increase in daytime sleepiness and fatigue level. It is recommended to raise awareness of individuals about these side effects of smoking on health and to encourage them to quit smoking.
