Prevalance of eye diseases in the sheep and goats in Siirt and its region

Abstract (EN)

In this research, it was aimed to highlight the importance and economic impacts of the ocular diseases on the animal institutions by investigating their prevalances in the sheep and goats bred in Siirt and its Region. For this purpose, 15.863 sheep and 15.021 goats were used. 12 different ocular diseases from 228 sheep and 7 different diseases from 48 goats were detected. In this study, racial discrimination was not applied because the Hamdani hybrid as sheep and also hair goat hybrid as goat were dominant in Siirt and its region. Among the eye diseases in sheep, 57 (24.99%) had corneal diseases, in 41 (17.98%) scleritis, in 38 (16.66%) epiphora, in 26 (11.46%) eyelid problems, in 19 (8.33%) IKC-pink eye, in 18 (7.89%) leukoma, in 12 (5.26%) microftalmi, in 6 (2.63%) amaourosis, in 4 (1.75%) trikofitozis, in 4 (1.75%) anemia, in 2 (0.87%) chemosis and in 1 (0.43%) pterygium. In goats, in 12 (24.99%) had corneal diseases, in 11 (22.91%) scleritis, eyelid problems in 8 (16.66%), infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC-pink eye) in 6 (12.5%) of the goats, in 6 (12.5%) microphthalmitis, in 4 (8.33%) fungi and in 1 (2.11%) anemia were detected. In conclusion, based on the data collected in this study, ophthalmic diseases were found to be widespread in Siirt and its region, and diseases such as keratitis, scleritis, and IKC-pink eye caused significant economic losses.
