Semiotic analysis of space and power in cinema: Tolga Karaçelik movies

Space is an important concept that contains a lot of information as an indispensable element of cinema. The cinematic space covers everything that is going on inside the frame. In this thesis, the décor, costumes, accessories, lighting, color, sound, music, editing, shooting scales, camera angles and camera movements that produce the cinematic space were examined and analyzed within the framework of concept of power of Tolga Karaçelik's Gişe Memuru (Booking Clerk) and Sarmaşık (Ivy) movies. The concept of power mentioned here, covers the power relations between individuals in all areas of society rather than the power of the government, which is the type of political power. In this context, as an analysis method; information channels within the scope of Christian Metz's semiotics theory were preferred to analyze in detail what the cinematic space contains. Thereby, indicators expressing power relations, struggle for power, hierarchical structure, authority, domination, order and obedience among individuals in the space were analyzed. Data obtained through information channels; such as motion images, dialogues, graphic drawings, music and sound effects allowed to examine the cinematic space in a holistic way and find the indicators of power. As a result, it was revealed that the director had established a power narrative in his Booking Clerk and Ivy movies within the scope mentioned in the form he used and arranged the space.
