Abstract (EN)

Scoliosis is the most common deformity of the vertebral column. It is a three-dimensional deviation of the vertebral column that occurs in different regions such as cervical, thoracic and lumbar and in different planes such as frontal, sagittal and axial. In this thesis study, morphometric changes in the sacrum and sacroiliac joint were investigated in order to evaluate the effects of scoliosis on pelvic structures. Our study was conducted retrospectively on the vertebral column and pelvis Multi-Slice Computed Tomography (MSCT) images of individuals who applied to Selçuk University Medical Faculty Hospital with any complaint between 2014 (April) and 2023 (December) in the Department of Radiology. A total of 60 individuals aged between 18 and 80 years (30 scoliosis patients and 30 healthy controls) were included in the study. It was determined that scoliosis patients were significantly younger and had a higher proportion of females compared to the control group. In univariate analyses, the right and left SIE intervals were found to be wider in the scoliosis group, whereas the SIE lengths, sacral width, BOSSÇ, CSSÇ, and IFMY averages were lower. After adjusting for age and sex, some of these differences lost statistical significance, while the differences in the left SIE interval, sacral width, CSSÇ, and left IFMY average remained significant. After adjusting for age and sex, some parameters that were initially non-significant—namely the left SIE posterior, promontory length, BOSTÇ, and bilateral IFMY-1—showed statistically significant differences. Several significant correlations were observed between age and morphometric measurements. A strong negative correlation was observed between age and right SIE anterior distance, while right/left SIE intervals and left SIE medial distance also decreased with age. In contrast, sacral width and SIE lengths increased as age advanced. The findings of this study suggest that scoliosis may influence pelvic morphology, highlighting the need to assess not only spinal curvatures but also their relationship with pelvic structures in radiological evaluations. Clinically, these results underscore the importance of considering pelvic symmetry and load transfer in scoliosis management. This study may serve as a foundation for future multidisciplinary research exploring the systemic effects of scoliosis.
