Comparing the performance of three severity scoring systems: An application at a public hospital ICU

Several severity scoring indicators have been developed in order to predict the mortality rate and / or severity of the patients? conditions. APACHE II and SAPS II are the two most common scores employed worldwide. This thesis investigates the performances of three severity scoring systems, APACHE II, SAPS II and SAPS II expanded in predicting mortality. In this retrospective analysis, all admissions to ICU at Ankara Etlik İhtisas Training and Research Hospital between October 2011 and March 2012 were enrolled. Of 100, 90 patients met the exclusion criteria. Demographic and medical data were collected pertaining to these patients. The study investigated if there is any statistical association between any demographic factor and medical condition and mortality rate, which was 49 per cent. It emerged from the descriptive analysis that entubation and GKS score were statistically significantly associated with mortality. Three models were analyzed using logistic regression. Discrimination was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, sensitivity, specificity, and correct classification rate. The results of the logistic regression analysis revealed that SAPS II exapanded outperforms APACHE II and SAPS II severity scores in predicting mortality. Keywords: 1. Severity Scoring Systems 2.
