Abstract (EN)

GRAFTING OF ITACONIC ACID ONTO SODIUM ALGINATEMEMBRANES(M.Sc. Thesis)Gülşen TAŞKINGAZ UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYSeptember 2006ABSTRACTIn this study itaconic acid (IA) was grafted onto NaAlg membranes by UVradiation. Grafting process was performed under nitrogen atmosphere andbenzophenone was used as a photosynthesizer. The effects of the polimerizationtime, monomer concentration and benzophenone concentration wereinvestigated. The suitable polimerization period was determined as 4 hours, theconcentration of the monomer and the benzophenone was optimized as 1,0 Mand 0,1 M respectively. The grafting percentage was found as 14%by weigtunder these conditions. For the purpose of increasing grafting percentage, NaAlg membranes wereswelled in 1,0 M IA and 0,1 M benzophenone solutions before grafting.Optimum grafting percentage was found as 14,75% for the membranes thatwere swollen in IA solution. Further the grafting process was performed for 4hours by UV irradiation and then carried out under the nitrogen atmospherewithout using UV radiation and the effect of temperature and grafting time wasinvestigated. It was observed that grafting could not be further increased at thecondition of 30 0C polimerization temperature and 2 hours polymerization timewhich was the optimized conditions.Grafted membranes were characterized by using FTIR (Fourier TransformInfrared Spectroscopy), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and DSC(Differantial Scanning Calorimetry). Intrinsic viscosity values and swelling ofthe grafted NaAlg membrane?s were also investigated.Science Code : 201.1.117Key Words : Grafting, NaAlg membranes, Itaconic acidPage Number :78Adviser :Prof.Dr.Oya ŞANLI
