Iquiry based learning and it's applicati̇ons in undergreduate mathematics educati̇on

Science and mathematics education are essential for individuals to gain research skills. It is inevitable that changes and technological developments in the world will have an impact on education.. Education methods develop and keep up with the times (Aydoğdu &Şırahane, 2012, s. 47). Inquiry-based education approach is one of these new education methods. Inquiry-based learning procedure consists of various stages (Lederman, Lederman, &Antink, 2013, s. 141). Students are encouraged to form hypotheses and make observations to reach a cause effect relationship. The use of inquiry-based learning to improve science and especially mathematics learning at undergraduate level is a popular topic both in the world and in our country, and many studies have been conducted on the applications and effectiveness of this learning method (Kaya & Yılmaz, 2016, s. 302). It has been stated that two most important concepts in inquiry-based education are deep involvement and cooperation among students (Chapman, 2011, s. 953). In addition to these two, teacher's actions also hold great importance (Handal, 2003, s. 55). In this study, applications of inquiry-based education in undergraduate mathematics have been considered. In the first section of the study, conceptual framework of inquiry-based education has been drawn. In this context, development of the concept, required roles of teachers and students and inquiry-based education models have been explained. In the second part, the applications of these methods in undergraduate mathematics are discussed. Keywords: Inquiry Based Teaching, Undergraduate Mathematics Education
