This dissertation aims to investigate temporal error monitoring abilities from the perspective of situational differences (social isolation and loneliness) and individual differences in negative affect (e.g., state anxiety and subclinical characteristics such as anxiety, depression, and OCD). The COVID-19 pandemic has influenced many aspects of our lives, including mental health and psychological/cognitive functioning. A unique aspect of COVID-19-related lockdown measures was forced social isolation, which led to an increase in self-reported loneliness. While loneliness has been known to influence cognition, few studies have specifically examined its effect on temporal cognition and error monitoring. Error monitoring refers to the ability to detect when an individual makes an error. Traditionally studied through categorical choice tasks, recent research has shown that individuals can also track the magnitude and direction of their errors. This dissertation hypothesizes that temporal judgments would be influenced by loneliness and that this relationship might be moderated by individual differences, particularly negative affect. The dissertation consists of three studies. Study 1 examines the effects of social isolation on general temporal information processing. Study 2 explores how social isolation specifically alters temporal awareness in a temporal error monitoring paradigm. Study 3 investigates how the relationship between loneliness and temporal error monitoring is influenced by subclinical characteristics and negative affect. The results indicate that the ability to track the direction and magnitude of timing errors is influenced by social isolation and individual differences.
