Abstract (EN)

Sport is crucial for the physical, emotional, and social development of children. This study investigates the impact of socioeconomic status on children's sports performance, specifically exploring its role among children aged 9-10 in Bingöl. Socioeconomic status encompasses factors such as family income, parents' education level, and occupational status, significantly affecting children's quality of life, educational success, and overall health conditions. This thesis aims to examine the specific effects of these factors on children's sports performance and participation in physical activity. The research employed a quantitative methodology and a cross-sectional design, conducted on 105 children selected from local primary schools. The Eurofit Test (FitnessGram), evaluating children's physical fitness, and a Physical Activity Questionnaire, measuring their levels of physical activity and relationship with sports, were used as data collection tools. Additionally, a detailed demographic information form was distributed to determine families' socioeconomic status. Findings indicate that socioeconomic status has a notable impact on children's participation in sports activities, access to appropriate sports materials, training, and events, and thus, their overall sports performance. Specifically, children from families with a high socioeconomic status tend to engage more in sports compared to children from families with a low socioeconomic status. This situation emerges as a result of accessibility, opportunities, and resources. This study emphasises the importance of addressing socioeconomic inequalities to promote children's participation in physical activity and sport performance. It also provides recommendations to ensure that all children have access to sport and physical activity. Key Words: 9-10 years old children, sports performance, socioeconomic status, physical activity, educational equity, sports education, physical fitness, societal inequalities, access and opportunity equality.
