Adaptation of the nutrition knowledge questionnaire for athletes (Sibba) into Turkish: The football case

The aim of this study was to adapt the Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire for Athletes (NKQA), which was developed by Furber et al. (2017) in the UK, psychometrically tested and originally named "Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire for Athletes", into Turkish. The study was carried out with football players in the Regional Amateur League, Super Amateur League and I. Amateur League in the 2023-2024 football season as a Turkish adaptation study from validity and reliability studies. The data were collected with questionnaire after language and content validity was ensured by the researcher. Percentages, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, Cronbach's alpha coefficient, item discrimination power index and correlation coefficient were used in the data analysis. Cronbach's alpha value for the whole questionnaire of nutrition knowledge for athletes was found to be 0.925 and it has high reliability. When the item correlations were analysed, it was concluded that some items in the questionnaire should be removed. The statements in the questionnaire were found to be consistent among themselves (α=0,91). In the calculation made by the halving method, the correlation coefficient between the two halves was calculated to be above 0.70 for the measurement tool. When the independent group t-test showing the discrimination power of the items was applied, the questionnaire was found to be distinctive in terms of measuring the desired quality. In the study, it was seen that 40,5% of the participants had a low level of knowledge, 39% had a very low level of knowledge and 20% had a medium level of knowledge.In this study conducted in football players, it was found that the participants had a low level of nutritional knowledge. SİBBA was found to be valid and reliable for the assessment of sports nutrition knowledge level. Further research is needed to evaluate and clarify its effect.
