Abstract (EN)

In accordance with the development in ship industry, the demand for the systems and auxiliary equipments used in ships is increasing rapidly. In this thesis, water monitor, which is an important equipment in external fire-fighting system onboard the ship, is studied. External fire-fighting systems are used to intervene the fires in shore and offshore and are located in fire-fighting ships. External fire-fighting systems may differ by capacity and capabilities related with the purpose of the ship. By this reason, classification societies have classified the external fire-fighting systems and set up regulations. This system ensures the water or foam to reach fire scene with the help of pumps. The water monitor, an important equipment of this system, throws water to a designated distance in vertical and horizontal direction with a set amount. In this study, the flow in water monitor is investigated by means of computational fluid dynamics. After, a prototype is produced in real dimensions and experimental studies have been conducted in order to maintain a validation with the numerical studies. Thus, the parameters acting on water monitor flow are observed numerically and experimentally. Firstly, the jet flow is investigated. To adjust the outlet velocity in the tip of the water monitor, nozzle is used. Water monitor geometries with different nozzle types are generated and numerical analyses are carried out. The reverse pelton type nozzle geometry is chosen as suitable because of it maintains more flux while it causes less reaction force for the same pressure compared with the other nozzle types. The reaction force of the nozzle geometry cannot be calculated with the one-dimensional force equation, so a commercial software, ANSYS Fluent, is used to model the flow problem in three dimension. Finally, a water monitor prototype is produced with conical type nozzle. Experiments are made with the produced prototype and outlet flux values are measured for different pressures. The experimental results are compared with the numerical ones and it is observed that the results are in good agreement.
