Educational issues in stories, novels and newspaper articles of Şükûfe Nihal Başar

In this study, educational issues in Şükûfe Nihal's stories, novels and newspaper articles are discussed. Şükûfe Nihal is one of the important writers of Turkish literature. In addition to being a writer, she was the first female student to graduate from Darülfünun and the first female teacher to work in high schools, which makes her views on education important. There are many studies on Şükûfe Nihal in the literature. Although it is mentioned in these studies that the author deals with the subject of education, her approach to education and the extent to which she includes issues related to education in her works are not mentioned. In the first part of the study, the problem situation, the importance and purpose of the research, assumptions, limitations are stated; definitions related to the subject are briefly given. In the second part, the relationship between literature and education is first mentioned. Then, information about the life, literary personality and works of Şükûfe Nihal is given. In the fourth part of the study, the findings obtained from Şükûfe Nihal's stories, novels and newspaper articles are analyzed under nine headings: understanding of education, education in the family, women's education, contribution of literature to education, art and education, teachers, students, educational institutions and foreign language education. In the fifth section, conclusions and recommendations are given. In our study, it has been observed that the author deals with the issues related to education in his works in connection with the modernization brought by the Republic. The author, who especially emphasizes the education of girls and women, adopts a Western understanding of education, but also expresses the necessity of a traditionalist approach.
