Abstract (EN)
Investigations of the different machining methods in manufacturing have been increased tomeet variable needs and requests in a new era. In a period of time, the machining methodshave been researched to improve by making variety of modifications on workpiece, cuttingtools and turning machine. Because of increasing demands, there have been many studies andtests on cutting tool inserts that have been used in manufacturing, to cut the workpiece in ashort period of time, and the low cost to machine them with surface quality. At this study, hard metal, P20 quality, cutting tool inserts as well as 2 and 4 axial ductcylindricalforged, SAE 4340 quality, materials have been used. The workpieces, which havebeen worked on, have been machined until failure occurred on cutting tool inserts, the cracksand damages were displayed by SEM. Also, so much cooling fluid has been used to createmechanical crack and disable the effects which were created by heat.Chip removal operation may be performed continuously and interrupted. Before reaching thewear criteria, cutting tool may be damaged at interrupted machining process under mechanicaland thermal fatigue in a short period of time. Experiments and tests have been done about thissituation. At the interrupted machining process, the effects of mechanical fatigue on toolshave been determined and the metal cutting parameters effects, which are caused failure onthe tools by mechanical fatigue, have been determined. The period of time up to the tooldamages that cracks on the tools occurred because of the mechanical fatigue has been studied.Relationship, between the increasing hardness on the tool rake face and the crack occurringtime has been realised.Key words: Interrupted cutting, cutting tool failures, cutting tool wear, hard metal tool insert, mechanical cracks.
