Adaptation of texts in periodicals: A case study of Hece Journal

The interest of foreigners in learning Turkish is increasing day by day, which makes the diversity of methods and materials in teaching Turkish as a foreign language significant. The need for materials other than textbooks is particularly evident in the area of reading skills. Reading texts are important elements of the teaching process as they contribute to all four basic skill areas and are functional in cultural transfer. However, original texts are often not suitable for direct use in the teaching process due to the language level. For this reason, text adaptation needs to be carried out on original texts for instructional purposes.Since studies evaluating texts in periodicals from this perspective are limited, the special issues of Hece Journal were determined as the sample for this research. Designed with a qualitative research approach, this study employed the document analysis method. Expert opinions were used as the data collection tool. The research question is: "What is the adapted version of the texts in the special issues of Hece Journal for the B2 level?"Eight texts were selected based on expert opinions, adapted to the B2 level, and analyzed comparatively with their original forms. In text adaptation, attention was paid to the appropriateness for the language level, the preservation of cultural elements, and the balance of literary quality. The research draws attention to the function of periodicals in teaching Turkish to foreigners and provides both theoretical and practical contributions to text adaptation studies.
