The relationship between peer and coach motivational climate and commitment to sports in team sports

The aim of the research is to examine the predictive effect and relationship of peer and coach motivational climate levels on the sport commitment levels of athletes participating in team sports. Additionally, the study investigates these factors based on the athletes' years of participation in sports and gender. The study includes a total of 402 participants, consisting of 191 female (Xage=14.59) and 211 men (Xage=15.33) and 211 male athletes. Among the participants, 173 are volleyball players, 122 are football players, 89 are basketball players, 10 are handball players. The data collection instruments used in the study are the Peer Motivational Climate Scale (PMCS), the Coach Motivational Climate Scale (CMCS-2), and the Sport Commitment Scale (SCS). The data were analyzed using Pearson correlation tests, regression, T-tests and ANOVA statistical analysis methods. According to the results of the statistical evaluation, a moderate positive and significant relationship was found between both the task and ego orientation dimensions of peer and coach motivational climates. A weak positive relationship was found between peer and coach motivational climate, task orientation and sport commitment dimensions. A very weak negative relationship was found between peer motivational climate ego orientation and sport commitment, confidence and enthusiasm dimensions, and between coach motivational climate dedication and enthusiasm dimensions. Peer and coach motivational climate task orientation sub- dimensions have a predictive effect on the confidence (R=0.114) and enthusiasm (R=0.173) dimensions of sports commitment, and peer and coach task orientations and coach ego orientation sub-dimensions have a predictive effect on the dedication (R=0.167) dimension of sports commitment. It was determined that the sub-dimension of coach motivational climate task orientation had a predictive effect on the vigor (R=0.173) dimension of commitment to sports. It was determined that the participants' perception of peer motivational climate task and ego orientation did not differ according to gender, and the perception levels of coach motivational climate ego orientation, unfair appreciation, and intra-team competition were higher in men than in women. A weak positive relationship was found between the perception of peer and coach motivational climate, level of commitment to sport and years of sporting except for the important role and effort sub-dimensions of coach motivational climate.
