Afghanistan under Taliban rule

There are very different interpretations of the period in the works written on the subject regarding the transition process to democracy, which is called the Republican Period in Afghanistan, and the political parties, which are considered among the indispensable elements of democracy. Therefore, it is important to reveal a comprehensive result by examining the period in question from a more objective and scientific point of view. The aim of this study is to determine the roles played by the political parties in Afghanistan in the pre-Taliban period in the transition to democracy. In this study, which was carried out in order to understand whether the political parties in the pre-Taliban era were democratic or not, literature reviews were carried out, which directly focused on the history and political position of Afghanistan. It has been tried to analyse the activities and roles of the political formations organized in Afghanistan in line with the formation types and objectives of political regimes and political parties in the democracy process. In the light of the data obtained, it has been understood that the political parties in Afghanistan are located quite far from the level of democracy. Political parties that gained the right to operate freely in the pre-Taliban period are observed to be highly restricted due to the pressure applied during the Taliban period.
