ABSTRACTMaster of Science ThesisTHALLIUM INTOXİCATION ON THE ULTRASTRUCTURE OFGammarus pulex HEPATOPANCREATIC CELLSF. Özgül ÖZALPAnadolu UniversityGraduate School of SciencesBiyology ProgramSupervisor:Prof.Dr.H.Mehtap KUTLU2007, 39 pagesThallium (TI) is a soft, malleable, bluish-white metal that is found in trace amounts inthe earth?s crust. TI is extremely toxic in aqueous solutions. The fresh water invertebrate hasbeen used as test organism to aquatic toxicology for many years. The genus Gammarus hasbeen particularly popular. In the present study ,the fresh water amphipod Gammarus pulexwas chosen as a histological changes and effects of vitamin E on recovery were studied.EC50value for thallium acetete was found 0,240 µl at Gammarus pulex . The histological changeswas determined with electron microscopic and light microscopic by the application of thevalue to gammarus pulex. Degenerative changes were frequently present in the cellularmembrane, there were changes in mitochondria as partial or total loss of cristae. Nucleusshowed signifcant shrinkage and deformation. We observed; fragmentation and dilation of therough endoplasmic reticulum (RER). When we compare control groups and experimentanimals relatively recovery was observed in the cellular membrane in particular. The numberof lesions were also decreased in the iner and outer mitochondrial membranes and also in theRER. Lipid droplets were observed more sparse in the hepatocytes. In this study, its isobserved that vitamin-E has recovering effect on disorders in hepatopancreatic sequence ofgammarus pulex caused by thallium. Keywords: Thallium acetate,Vitamin E, Electron microscope, Hepatopancreatic ceca,Gammarus pulexii
