Abstract (EN)
This study investigates the reasons of the price stability in the pre-tanzimat period of the Ottoman Empire. Market regulatory mechanisms were analyzed in order to determine these reasons. The structure and price formation of the wholesale and retail markets were presented in detail and the effectiveness of price regulations in establishing the price stability was empirically tested. Kadı registries, kanunname manuscripts and the documents in the Prime Ministerial State Ottoman Archives were used as sources and the datas were collected from primary and secondary sources. The findings show that the market regulations, which were implemented by sui generis dynamics of wholesale and retail markets, are the main reason behind establishing the price stability.
