The Evaluation of new structure in historical surroundings and infill applications of Istanbul case

Architecture throughout history has met with new structures in historical surroundings and these applications have been unable to progress sometimes in terms of quality and consciousness, sometimes because respect was not shown to the surroundings in which they were found and because the designs did not fit these surroundings visually. Until the 20th century the development of the phenomenon of protecting historical surroundings increased and in this century up to today it acquired new meanings as did the importance of new designs for these surroundings and uniting old and new. In this study what will be examined is new designs in historical surroundings and the methods applied while these designs are being drawn up. în the second section of the study the concept of the surroundings in general and in particular of historical surroundings was dealt with and the protection phenomenon in historical surroundings, the continuation of historical surroundings, the modern concept of protection and the architectural values of historical surroundings have been fixed as headings. In the third section the meaning of uniting old and new and the concept of Infill and various design approaches in Infill buildings have being examined. İn the fourt section in order to examine the Infill designs in historical surroundings the necessary environmental analyses and the criteria for creating the foundation for examining designs have been taken up with examples. In addition various Istanbul districts were taken up as research areas and some Infill applications in this region were eveluated according to identified criteria. While the research began with the examples examined, what was assessed for specific points was how much the existing Infill buildings had quality and correct applications and how new Infill designs had to be made. As the result of the examination, what was brought out where Infill designs were correctly applied was what methods had to be followed, how historical surroundings would be affected where these applications were carried out, and the need for new designs made in accordance with what rules in their tie with design guides.
