Abstract (EN)
Turkish women have gone through many changes as a result of social, legal and political upheavals made in different periods of history and became a symbol of modernization after the declaration of the Turkish Republic. Since the changes in Turkey have not been produced as an internal process, gender stereotypes could not be broken due to the fact that equality before the law was not reflected in daily life. Television, one of the means of mass communication known to affect individuals easily, serves to protect patriarchal ideology present in society by shaping the culture and reproducing social values. In other words, it can be claimed that despite social changes and developments, social gender roles are still present, reproduced and supported by mass communication means which are normally regarded as the productions of change. In this study, female characters in the series are examined by discourse analysis and it is concluded that in spite of many positive changes for Turkish women, women preserve their traditional roles in present day Turkey.
