ABSTRACTMSc THESISAN INVESTIGATION OF UPLIFT RESISTANCE INFOUNDATION ENGINEERING AND THE ANALYSES OFUPLIFT RESISTANCE OF PILE FOUNDATIONSAhmet DEM RDEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERINGINSTITUTE OF NATURAL AND APPLIED SCIENCESUNIVERSITY OF ÇUKUROVASupervisor : Prof. Dr. Mustafa LAMANYear : 2006, Page : 110Jury : Prof. Dr. Mustafa LAMAN: Prof. Dr. M. Arslan TEK NSOY: Assist. Prof. Dr. Hakan GÜNEYLIn this study, uplift capacity of pile foundations embedded in sand wasinvestigated by conducting laboratory model tests. Model pile foundations with17mm and 34mm diameters were used in the tests. The parameters investigated forthe uplift capacity of pile foundations include the length, diameter, embedment ratioand surface roughness of pile foundations and density of sand. It was observed thatuplift capacity of pile foundation increased with increasing the embeddment ratio, dimensions of foundation, density of sand and surface roughness of pile foundations. On the other hand, the tests were modelled by using the finite elementprogram PLAXIS. The experimental results were compared with the numerical andtheoretical results and finally, some necessary suggestions for continuation of thiswork were put forward. Keywords: Pile foundation, surface roughness, uplift capacity, density of sand.II
