Socio-economic status of Kiraz/Kilas town in the id-19th century according to the Temettuat records

Temettüat defterleri (Profits and earnings registries) have an important place among the rich archival documents from the Ottoman Empire to the present. Temettüat defterleri clearly show the economic and social life of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century. Temettüat defteri sheds light on the demographics and ethnical structure of a region, the level of property and immovable property at the level of people, the annual earnings of the taxpayer, the size of the enterprises, the total tax burden, the labor force and the occupation of the individuals, the agricultural products and the animals fed, the commercial and industrial establishments. These registries have the content and richness to explain the Ottoman social and economic situation in the mid-19th century. Temettüat defterleri, which record all the assets of individuals, provide detailed information about the communities living in the Ottoman provinces. Temettüat defterleri provide detailed information about total amount of soil, total amount of cultivated and fallow land, land allocated for production, amount of land allocated according to product type, yields, livestock numbers and revenues, various industrial, commercial and service sectors. In this study, Temettüat defterleri of Kiraz subprovince and its villages were investigated. In the first part, the administrative structure and population, the sectoral distribution of taxpayers in the Temettüat defterleri and the social status of the taxpayers were discussed. In the second part, the economic structure, animal husbandry, products and production quantities and taxes in the sub-district were discussed. The last chapters were about tax and income. The study resulted in with a conclusion, bibliography and additional tables.
