Abstract (EN)
One Thousand and One Nights is an extensive and universal literary work including Middle Eastern and South Asian folktales and stories compiled in Arabic. Women constitute the most important characters of the Nights, especially Scheherazade, the narrator of the tales and the heroine of the frame story. The representations of the temptress archetype are often portrayed as women who are immoral, degraded, and should be avoided. In addition, because they agitate traditional gender roles in society, it is often seen as a disturbing figure. They oppose the patriarchal system and assert their agency by using sexuality to acquire power. The novel gives women agency while simultaneously painting them in a negative light, and by sexualizing or portraying female bodies erotically, it meets the raw need of the patriarchal society. This encourages the female characters to overpower males while objectifying them and enables them to play around with the male characters. This thesis explores the representations of the temptress archetype in One Thousand and One Nights, their characteristics, and their connections to literature, mythology, religion, and history and offers a detailed understanding of how these portrayals defy traditional gender norms, empower women, and go through the social restraints imposed on them.
