Retrospective evaluation of clinical and pathological features of patients with thymoma and thymic carcinoma

Objective: We aimed to analyze the demographic data, biochemical parameters, tumor pathological features, treatments, presence of metastasis, relapse status and their effects on survival and relationship between each other, who presented to our center, as a center's experience. Materials and Methods: Fifty patients diagnosed with thymoma and thymic carcinoma who applied to Gaziantep University Oncology Hospital between January 2010 and December 2019 were retrospectively evaluated. Kaplan-Meier method was used for survival analysis, P <0.05 value was considered statistically significant. Results: The median age of the patients was 47.5. Of the patients (34%) were women. Myasthenia Gravis (MG) was detected in 11 (22%) of the patients. When analyzed by pathological subtypes, 6% of patients were Type A, 8% were Type AB, 26% were Type B1, 22% were Type B2, 16% were Type B3, and 18% were thymic carcinoma. Female gender, chemotherapy only, presence of metastasis at the time of diagnosis, alkaline phosphatase (ALP)> 62 U / L and sodium <140 mmol / L at the time of diagnosis were associated with low overall survival (OS) time. The patients were not operated, and the second, third and fourth row chemotherapies were associated with low disease-free survival (HS). The median GS duration of the patients was 111.8 ± 22.6 months (67.4-156.2), and the median HS duration was 111.6 ± 16.7 months (78.8-144.4). Conclusion: Taking second, third, and fourth line CT was associated with an increased risk of recurrence. Patients with metastasis, low sodium and high ALP levels, resistant to first-line treatment and women with gender should be taken into consideration in the treatment process, considering that they are risky in terms of low survival times.
