Abstract (EN)

COMPARISON OF THE EFFECTS OF METFORMIN AND ROSIGLITAZONE ONOXIDATIVE STRESS, METABOLIC PARAMETERS AND ANTHROPOMETRICMEASUREMENTS IN PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUSDR. TURKAN PASALI KILITDiabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic, progressive disease, result of endogenous insulindeficiency or peripheral ineffectiveness. Insulin resistance means the defect of biologicalresponse to effects of exogenous or endogenous insulin and its one of the main reason in thepathophysiology of type 2 DM. In this study, we compared the effects of metformin androsiglitazone on diabetes regulation, metabolic control, anthropometric measurements andoxidative stress parameters. Furthermore we evaluate the effects of these drugs on theprogress of diabetic neuropathy and retinopathy.Forty three patients under age 70 with newly diagnosed type 2 DM were included instudy. Patients were randomized into two drug groups. Seventeen patients in metformin groupand 12 patients in rosiglitazone group were completed the study. In the beginning, third andsixth months of the study, metabolic and laboratory parameters of patients were examined.Furthermore anthropometric measurements of patients have been written. In the beginningand sixth month of the study, oxidative stress parameters examined. Electromyography(EMG) was made for diabetic neuropathy and ocular examination made for evaluatingdiabetic retinopathy. The basal, third and sixth month anthropometric measuring values of patients takingmetformin and rosiglitazone were found similar. Statistically significant differences werefound in insulin and insulin resistance in rosiglitazone?s favor when we look at basal, thirdand sixth month metabolic parameters. A significant difference was found between third andsixth month LDL cholesterol levels in metformin?s favor. In the end of sixth month, statistically significant difference was established in serum sulfhydryl values inrosiglitazone?s favor. There was no significant difference between the basis and sixth monthEMG measuring results of patients. The effects of two drugs on progression of retinopathywere also found similar.
