The effect of artificial intelligence supported nutrition intervention on glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients

Abstract (EN)

Objective: Diabetes is a chronic, broad-spectrum metabolic disorder that manifests itself with hyperglycemia in the organism due to insulin deficiency and / or problems in the mechanism of insulin action. Successful diabetes care requires not only appropriate medications but also lifestyle changes in terms of diet and activity. In this study, it was aimed to observe the effect of artificial intelligence-supported nutritional intervention on glycemic control in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Method and Material: The study was conducted between 20 July 2020 and 20 January 2021, in Adana with patients diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus who do not use insulin. six different family health centers were included 16 patients in the intervention group and 15 patients in the control group. This study is a multicenter, prospective longitudinal cohort study. Satisfaction with Life Scale and Audit of Diabetes Dependent Quality of Life (ADDQoL 19) were applied to both groups and the intervention group was expected to use the artificial intelligence supported software on the web page "www.airmed-a.com" where they recorded their meals for three months. Results: A total of 31 patients, 16 of whom were male with a mean age of 54.75±8.43 years, and 15 of whom were female with an average age of 53.53±10.94 years, were included in our study. 31.3% (N=5) of the male patients participating in the study are in the control group, and 68.8% (N=11) are in the intervention group. While 66.7% (N=10) of the female patients participating in the study are in the control group, 33.3% (N=5) are in the intervention group. When the groups are examined separately; 28.43±3.07 kg/m2 in the control group and 30.47±3.72 kg/m2 in the intervention group. Conclusion: In our study, it has been shown that artificial intelligence-based nutrition practices can provide significant changes on glycemic control in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. It can be predicted that patients and physicians can benefit from artificial intelligence-based applications in all aspects of chronic disease care.
