Abstract (EN)

The aim of the present prospective study is to investigate the postoperativeperiod and analgesic requirements of patients undergoing PercutaneousNephrolithotomy with and without tract anesthesia. The study was performed on a total of 46 patients treated with PercutaneousNephrolithotomy in the Urology Clinic of Ahmet Necdet Sezer Training andResearch Hospital, Afyon Kocatepe Universty, between 01 February 2007 and 01February 2008. The patients were divided into two groups, each consisting of 23patients. One group was given postoperative local anesthesia a long the dilatationtract, while the other was not given the same analgesic. A resercher?s questionnaireand a visual analog scale was used to measure the pain level experienced by thepatients. All data were collected through face-to-face patient interviews made bythe researcher. Percentage, chi-square, student t and Kruskall Wallis tests were usedto analyze the collected data. Error level was ascertained to be at least a =0.05.The results of the study indicated that there was no significant differencebetween the pain levels of the patients with and without tract anesthesia. It was observed that the average time to first analgesic need of the group withtract anesthesia was longer than that of the group without anesthesia. The average total dosage of analgesics consumed during the wholehospitalization period of all the patients was similar in cases where tract anesthesiawas with or without. There was no significant difference with regard to thecomplication rates observed in the two groups and the type of anesthesiaadministered.n conclusion, anesthesia administered a long the dilatation tract followingPercutaneous Nephrolithotomy do not have an impact on the analgesic need andcomlications.Key Words: Analgesic use, , Percutaneous nephrolithotomy, postoperative pain, postoperative complications, renal calculi, Visual analog scale
