Abstract (EN)

Akkurt, R. Evaluation of Bioelectrical Impedance Measurements in the Preoperative and Postoperative Periods of Patients Undergoing Transurethral Resection Surgery, Eskişehir Osmangazi University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation, Medical Specialization Thesis, Eskişehir, 2025. In our study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between phase angle and changes in body fluid compartments measured by bioimpedance in the preoperative and postoperative periods in patients undergoing TURP and TURM surgeries, and to evaluate their association with morbidity. Following approval from the ethics committee, our prospectively planned study included 43 patients with ASA scores I–III who underwent TUR surgery under general or spinal anesthesia. In the preoperative period, parameters such as phase angle, extracellular fluid, intracellular fluid, extravascular and intravascular fluid, and impedance were measured using a bioimpedance analysis device. Preoperative laboratory data were recorded. During surgery, the type of surgery, anesthesia method, amount of intravascular and irrigation fluids used, and vital parameters were documented. In the postoperative period, another bioimpedance measurement was performed immediately after surgery in the recovery unit. Postoperative laboratory data were also recorded. At the 24th postoperative hour, a final bioimpedance measurement was performed. Hospital stay duration, morbidity, and complications were noted. We observed that in patients who developed morbidity, the phase angle measured at the 24th postoperative hour was below the critical threshold of 5.0°. In the group with comorbidities, there were significant differences in phase angle and other fluid status parameters compared to the group without comorbidities. We believe that preoperative bioimpedance analysis can be effective in predicting postoperative complications and in managing intraoperative and postoperative fluid replacement, and may become a part of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols for future TUR procedures.
