The moderating role of self-efficacy in the relationship between personality traits and occupational resilience of tour guides

This study examines the moderating effect of self-efficacy perception on the relationship between personality traits and occupational resilience of tourist guides. A correlational survey design was adopted using quantitative research method. The sample of the study consists of 206 professional tourist guides actively working in Turkey. The participants were reached through social media, professional groups and e-mail and the data collection process was carried out in October-November 2024. Cervantes Personality Scale, Occupational Resilience Scale and General Self-Efficacy Scale were used as data collection tools. Hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to test the research hypotheses and moderation analyses were applied using the MedMod module of Jamovi software to determine the moderating effect of self-efficacy perception. Independent sample t-test and ANOVA tests were used to evaluate the effects of demographic variables such as gender, marital status, age, and education level. According to the results of the analysis, it was found that the initiation, persistence and maintenance effort-insistence dimensions of self-efficacy played a moderating role in the relationship between personality and occupational resilience. This effect was observed to be more pronounced especially in individuals with low and medium level of self-efficacy. In conclusion, the study contributes to understanding the dynamics between these variables by revealing the effect of self-efficacy perception on occupational resilience and personality traits of tourist guides. It is suggested that training programs to increase the occupational resilience of guides working in the tourism sector should include elements that support self-efficacy. In the future, it is recommended to examine these findings in depth and to evaluate the effect of intervention programs to increase self-efficacy perception with qualitative research.
