Tourism and migration nexus: analyzing the motivations and dynamics of the transition from tourist to resident - a case study on Antalya, Turkey

SUMMARY This thesis explores the intricate relationship between tourism and migration, specifically focusing on the transition from international tourists to foreign residents in Antalya. Employing a qualitative approach and criterion sampling, 22 foreign residents who initially visited Antalya as tourists and transitioned to residency were interviewed between May 20 and May 30, 2024. Through thematic analysis, the study uncovers the diverse motivations behind these transitions, including economic factors, life choices, and socio-cultural integration. This research delves into the push and pull factors influencing this migration, the obstacles encountered during the transition, and the strategies employed to overcome these challenges. The comprehensive analysis provided by this thesis illuminates the complex dynamics between the tourism industry and various forms of settlement. It reveals the underlying motivations for these transitions and their broader implications for destination management. The findings highlight the critical role of economic opportunities, lifestyle preferences, and cultural assimilation in influencing tourists' decisions to become temporary, semi-permanent, or permanent residents in a touristic destination. Additionally, the study examines the impact of this migration process on the tourism industry, its interaction with the local community, and the infrastructural implications. By shedding light on the multifaceted reasons behind the transition from international tourists to different types of residencies and examining its impacts on local infrastructure and community dynamics, this thesis offers valuable insights for tourism management, urban planning, and policymakers. It contributes to developing sustainable strategies to balance the demands of the tourism-migration nexus with the needs of local communities, ensuring the sustainable growth of developing destinations.
