Evaluation of Turkish and American horror films with psychanalytic film criticism: Siccin 5 and the Conjuring examples

The main problem of this research is how and in what way psychoanalytic concepts are used in Turkish and US horror films. In the context of this problem, Siccin 5 (Turkey) and The Conjuring (US) films, determined by purposeful sampling approaches and methods were evaluated by psychoanalytic film criticism. As a result of the historical origins of horror cinema and the effect of culture on the horror genre, it was thought that psychoanalytic concepts were included in Siccin 5 and The Conjuring films, and it was chosen as the sample for the study because it is the most watched film in their country and is a sequel. With the emergence of the horror genre, different types of fear have also been shaped as a result of cultural codes and religious references. In selected films; The coexistence of the relationship between religion and psychology is also discussed in a cultural context. Psychoanalysis; Apart from being a research method, it is used for treatment purposes by analyzing hidden and suppressed thoughts. In this context, films are regarded as cases in psychoanalytic film criticism. Sample films evaluated in the context of the relationship between film and its subconscious; Based on the doctrines of Freud and Lacan, Dream, Subconscious, Oedipus Complex, Symbolic / Imaginary / Real etc. It has been studied with concepts. By establishing the link between the horror films that depict the cinema of two different countries, it has been analyzed through concepts related to psychology. In the research, the literature was searched using qualitative method and the narrative structure in Siccin 5 and The Conjuring samples was interpreted with psychoanalytic concepts. As a result of the research findings; Films with two different country tags have similar characteristics in psychoanalytic terms; However, it was understood that the horror characters, locations, actors used in the film differ in terms of cultural and religious references. In this context, two films selected as samples; It has been found that it can be interpreted through common psychoanalytic concepts.
