Abstract (EN)
USA, Japan and New Zealand earthquake codes and the Eurocodes applied in European countries are used and legally recognized in many countries. Turkey is among the countries that periodically renew and update earthquake regulations. Within the scope of this postgraduate study, a comparison was made between the Turkish Building Earthquake Regulation (TBDY-2018) announced in 2018 and the Eurocode-8 regulations used in the European Union and many countries of the world. Within the scope of the thesis, first of all, the provisions of the codes and design principles that determine the design of the buildings were compared, and the similar and different provisions of the Eurocode-8 and TBDY-2018 codes were summarized. Afterwards, it is aimed to compare these codes by analyzing and designing a 10-storey shear wall-frame structure selected as an example. During the calculation, the maximum ground acceleration of the sample building, which is considered to be within the boundaries of Pamukkale University, was obtained from the Turkey Earthquake Hazard Maps and the design of the building was made based on the DD-2 earthquake. While designing the structural system, C25 class concrete and B420C class reinforcement were used, and the sample building was designed using the results obtained from the most unfavorable load combinations. The results obtained from the calculations showed that there can be significant differences in the definition of earthquake spectrums in the Turkish Building Earthquake Code and the Eurocode-8. In particular, the rules regulating the calculation of the corner periods of the spectrum showed that the acceleration values depending on the period can differ significantly. This situation significantly affects the calculation of the base shear forces, which must be taken into account in the seismic design calculations. Another difference detected is caused by the effective section stiffnesses coefficients considered. The definition of effective section stiffnesses using different coefficients affects both the distribution of moment and shear forces of beams and columns, the strength demand in the building and the displacement values at floor levels. In addition to these differences, it has been determined that there are differences between the Turkish Building Earthquake Code and the Eurocode-8 regulation on issues such as the force reduction coefficients, definitions of structural irregularities in the plan and vertical direction, and the distribution of earthquake forces at floor levels. It was determined that all these code-based differences affect the results calculated. Using the information obtained from the selected sample building, the design earthquake forces, story shear forces, story displacements and relative story drifts were compared and evaluated.
