Analysis of Turkish ship management companies in accordance to institutional theory

In this study, among organisational theories, old and new institutional theory literature and related studies were deeply perused and four levels of study were foreseen. The model in this study was based on Tolbert and Zucker's study of level of institutionalisation which was also benefited from Berger and Luckmann's study of process of institutionalisation.In this study, institutionalisation variables for this model and questions in relation to these variables were developed. Turkish shipowners and ship management companies' owners were interviewed face to face by semi-structured interview form in order to obtain their point of view on institutionalisation and the data was applied to content analysis to analyse degree of institutionalisation by the model which was introduced by Berger and Luckmann first and then developped Tolbert and Zucker. In this study, there are four chapters. In the first chapter, organisational theories, old institutional theory, new institutional theory, family business and their institutionalisation, the theory of agency and the theory of contingency approach are examined. In the second chapter, maritime organisations and seatrade elements, global maritime and Turkish maritime and its history, elements of family business acting as shipowners and ship management companies are endorsed. In the third chapter, stages of study, its aim, the model, data collection and development of variables, sample organising are described. In the fourth chapter, data analysis are introduced and their connection with institutional literature are provided Results and resume of outcomes are represented. Limitations in the study are listed and future recommendations are offered.
