Türk öğrencilerin İngilizce konuşma eğitiminde karşılaştıkları zorlukların çeşitli değişkenler açısından incelenmesi

Speaking skill is mentioned not only as the most important but also as the most frustrating language skill. The major purpose of this study was detecting the difficulties which can be experienced by Turkish EFL learners while learning speaking skill. In addition it aimed at finding some speaking activities which might be useful in teaching and learning speaking skills. The effect of teachers' mother tongue on students' oral performance was also tried to be determined. Sixty four intermediate EFL learners were selected and divided into four groups. One group was taught by a NEST applying specific speaking activities, one group was taught by a NEST with no specific speaking activities, one group was taught by a NNEST using specific speaking activities and one group was taught by NNEST with no specific speaking activities. All students participated in two interviews. Lack of motivation, inhibition, students' mother tongue, and assessment system were found as some of the difficulties which students encountered. According to the findings, watching films and reading books have a positive effect on EFL learners' oral performance. Analysis of the oral exam scores indicated that teachers' mother tongue has no effect on students' oral production.
