Turkish foreign policy in a decade of economic transformation, 1980-1989

This thesis examines the Turkish economy during the transmission period from 1980 to 1989 in terms of the political economy, with a focus on the political and economic conditions behind the transition and its impact on foreign relations and visa versa. Chapter One examines the interdependence of the economy and foreign policy, giving emphasis to the political economy approach. In Chapter Two, an historical account of the period beginning with 1923 and ending with 1980, broken into two parts, the statist period from 1923 to 1950, and 1950 to 1980, which saw premature liberalization and planned growth period, with special attention to the international conjuncture and foreign relations. Chapter Three analyzes the policy implementations of the governments between 1980 and 1989 in terms of foreign policy making. Moreover, the difficulties, requirements and political agendas of the time are discussed.
