Abstract (EN)
The basic aim of this study, entitled The Transformation in Newspaper Advertisements from The Perspective of Economic Policies the Period of the 1950-1990 in Turkey was to evaluate the reflections on advertising of developments in the economic field in the period between 1950 and 1990, to analyse the relation between changes in advertisements and change in the economy, and to show the basic characteristics of the advertising of this period. The first part of the study comprehensively covers the process of economic development in Turkey in the light of world developments, developments in the economy of the period under investigation, policies followed and the results obtained. The second part focuses on the historical development of Turkish advertising before and after the declaration of the republic. This part covers specific developments in advertising in the period 1950-1990, and such topics as technical changes, the media, agencies and professional associations. In the third part, research and the results obtained are analysed. In this research, it was found that the economic policies applied and the developments in the period 1950-1990 were reflected to a large extent in the field of advertising. It is seen that alongside the government's general economic approach, macro-economic changes – policies in such fields as import and export, production of goods and services, investment incentives, consumer spending, and total government income – had an effect on the newspaper advertising of the period. According to the results of the study, it was seen that newspaper advertisements published in the period under review, which was examined within three separate economic periods, underwent change as an effect of economic policies according to years, periods, product and service categories, and the origin and characteristics of the advertiser. Also, it was concluded that some economic factors had an effect in changing the basic stylistic elements of the advertisement: the use of an emblem or logo, the use of colour, and the use of images. In addition to this, it has made a contribution to the development of economic practices and in general both the advertising sector and the local businesses which are advertising and the brands which they own.
