Abstract (EN)
Throughout history, perceptions and roles of motherhood have changed according to culture, geography, social and economic circumstances. These changes had always been introduced through socialization on the physical ground. Nowadays, social media has started to replace this and becomes the social space where each one can have a word no matter her geographical location, socio-economic and intellectual level. Some even acquire a leading role, followed by thousands and they influence other mothers in a certain way. Instagram is the most favored social media platform by young people who are the subjects of changing motherhood. As a result of Covid-19 lockdowns social media behaviors have been altered and enhanced its place in daily lives both commercially and socially. The focal point of this dissertation is to understand how motherhood is represented in Turkey, in social media and what are the common characteristics promoting their success. Clashing representations of ideal and actual mother are discussed in the light of the qualitative data gathered through Instagram by netnography, as well as the data coming from the semi-structured interviews made with popular Instagram mothers, "Instamoms" in Turkey. Followers and haters are discussed whose feedbacks are constantly shaping social attitudes and perceptions. In social media, living 7/24, they can reach somebody awake and experienced to help them, in return they would help others. This dissertation revealed significantly the differences between the discourses of academic feminists and online mothers. Keywords: Motherhood, Mothering, Mother, Instagram, Social Media, Internet, Representation, Performance, Feminism, Netnography, Covid-19, Pandemic.
