Abstract (EN)

This research aims to reveal the current situation of virtual museums in Turkey, to determine the differences between state and private museums and to determine the similar and different views of museum directors concerning virtual museums. In the research, a mixed-method is used in which quantitative and qualitative methods are used together. Within the scope of the research, the literature on the concepts of museums and virtual museums was examined and the features expected to be found in virtual museums were determined. A category list was prepared and the level of use of the determined features in virtual museums were examined and the data obtained were presented as a cross table with numerical and percentage ratios. In addition, the data obtained by conducting interviews with museum directors were analyzed using discourse analysis. In line with the findings obtained in the study, it has been determined that there are virtual museums that can be considered as an example of virtual museums in Turkey, but the features offered in general are insufficient. However, it has been determined that museum directors have a general idea about virtual museums and their general attitudes are positive. However, it is not possible to say that most museum directors have a high level of awareness of the main purpose and necessity of virtual museums.
