Abstract (EN)

This thesis addresses and discusses the life of Elia Kazan, the world-famous film director of Anatolian Greek origin, born in Turkey. Elia Kazan was born on 7 September 1909 in Kadıköy, Istanbul, as a son of a merchant family which had its roots down to Kayseri, and his family migrated to the United States of America while he was just 4 years-old.After his studies at Williams College, he attended acting studies at Yale School of Drama for three years. The first groups which Kazan has attended was ?Group Theatre?. Elia Kazan joined in ?Group Theatre? 1932 as an actor and played an active part in this group until 1939. He formed ?Actor?s Studio? in 1947, where many big shots of the cinema and theatre world later on attended for acting studies. Many well-known actors and actresses like Marlon Brando, Karl Malden, Vivien Leigh, James Dean, Robert De Niro, Anthony Quinn, Natalie Wood and Marilyn Monroe attended this acting studio. Putting his stamp in the history of film-making with capital letters, Elia Kazan directed many masterpieces like ?A Streetcar Named Desire?, ?Vipa Zapata?, On the Waterfront?, ?East of Eden? and ?Baby Doll?. Kazan attended ?Lincoln Center Repertory Theatre? in 1962 and staged four plays at this theatre and left stage works in 1964.Making fits first trip to Turkey in 1955, Elia Kazan visited Kayseri, where his family had its roots. Visiting Turkey for many times throughout his life, Kazan was to say that humanbeing is yearning and aspiring for his or her motherland as he or she grew older.Directing films with special emphasis on social concerns, Elia Kazan is undisputedly considered to be one of the most prominent creators of the American cinema. He passed away on 28 September 2003. What he left behind are many theatrical plays he staged, unforgetable films he directed, and books he wrote, as well as his deep love for Turkey.Keywords: Cinema, theatrical plays, method
