Sustainability in Turkey construction sector: sustainable concrete production

Environmental issues induce problems which affect people, firm and nations simultaneously. It is foreseen that, this affects will increase over time. Protecting the natural environment and leaving a sustainable future to the new generations has turned into common duty for humankind. Besides concerns of the countries about this matter, in order to prevent foreign-dependency limited source usage became more crucial. It has been observed that, for the previous years in order to achieve their targets concrete production companies have been turned their faces to the environmental matters. Concrete production companies need to be aware of trends in the concrete production sector in order not to lose market share in the market and to gain new market share. The companies that are aware of the innovative works that have been taking place in the concrete sector can convert this situation to oppurtunity, while the ones that are not informed will turn into a threat. The basis of this thesis is determining the benefits of sustainable concrete produced by environmental resource use on behalf of environment and society as well as informing the companies involved in the Turkish concrete sector about sustainable concrete production. Determination of the tendency of the companies to start to sustainable concrete production, difficulties and facilitates encountered in the companies in the applications of sustainable concrete production has been determined. Firstly, the current state of the world and Turkey's construction sector has been analyzed, which has been contributions to the economies of countries in the construction sector. Total concrete production in turkey and world has determined with literature review. The carbon footprint values caused by concrete production has been determined. Sustainable concrete production is known to reduce the use of naturel resources. The use of waste materials by recycling methods in concrete production has positive effects on environment and humanity. The concept of sustainable concrete produced in the world and is planned to be produced in Turkey and explained in detail. As a research method, the defination of the certification system prepared by the Sustainable Concrete Council in the world, main objectives, certification requirements and certification system are specified in detail. Concrete companies' views on sustainable concrete production hava been determined. A survey study was prepared in order to determine the opportunities, threats, weaknesses and strengths that companies when the sustainable production precess was started in Turkey. After the evaluation phase of these data, this research foreseen that, this datas will enlighten the academics who study in this topic and benefits for concrete campanies for humanity and environment and the opportunities and threats of using sustainable concrete for concrete companies will be determined, measures to be taken against the diffuculties that may be encountered in pratice have been identified.
