Abstract (EN)
This thesis aims to identify the challenges encountered in the use of native plant species in landscape design practices in Turkey and to develop strategies for overcoming these issues. Despite Turkey's rich biodiversity and native vegetation offering vast potential for landscape applications, native plants are underutilized in such practices. This study investigates the attitudes, knowledge levels, and barriers faced by landscape architects regarding the use of native plants through a survey conducted with 319 landscape architects across Turkey. The findings reveal that landscape architects prefer native plants primarily for their ecological compatibility (69.91%) and aesthetic benefits (19.43%), yet their adoption is hindered by factors such as lack of knowledge (57.5%), aesthetic perceptions, and client expectations. A significant proportion of participants (94.04%) expressed a willingness to use native species more extensively if their knowledge base were enhanced. Moreover, the study highlights the critical role of digital information sources and training programs in promoting the use of native plants. While traditional information sources are losing relevance due to digitalization, academic resources and universities remain significant contributors to information acquisition. Based on the results, several strategies are proposed to promote the use of native plants. These include developing educational programs for landscape architects and consumers, increasing the diversity of local native species available in nurseries, and initiating communication campaigns to raise client awareness. Furthermore, preparing design guidelines and case studies that emphasize the aesthetic potential of native plants can encourage their broader adoption in landscape design. Policies incentivizing the use of native plants in public projects and financial support for these initiatives are also recommended. Additionally, advancing scientific research on the genetic resources, environmental adaptability, and economic value of native species can address existing knowledge gaps. In conclusion, this study analyzes the current state of native plant use in landscape design in Turkey and develops strategies to enhance their integration. The widespread adoption of native plants will significantly contribute to sustainable landscape practices and the preservation of ecological balance. Strong collaboration among practitioners, consumers, and policymakers is essential to achieving these objectives.
