ABSTRACT PhD THESIS SUPPLY RESPONSE OF SELECTED FIELD CROPS IN TURKEY Tuna ALEMDAR DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS INSTITUTE OF NATURAL AND APPLIED SCIENCES UNIVERSITY OF ÇUKUROVA Supervisor : Prof. Dr. Şinasi AKDEMİR Year: 2003, Pages:81 Jury : Prof. Dr. Şinasi AKDEMİR : Doç. Dr. Haydar ŞENGÜL Yrd. Doç. Dr. Turan BÎNİCİ In this study, supply responses were investigated for some major field crops grown in Turkey. Acreage was considered as the dependent variable in the study. Expected prices, gross return and economic parameters related to competing and complementary crops were used as explanatory variables. It was observed that all the crops studied are responsive to changes in economic variables and gross return in particular. Responses of cash crops such as cotton and dry onions were found high compared to those of subsistence crops such as wheat and barley. Supply response of potatoes, a cash crop, was found lower even than that of subsistence crops such as wheat and barley. This was attributed to special soil requirements and marketing problems of potatoes. Elasticities are low in general. This indicates that the structure of agricultural production cannot be altered by price policies alone. Therefore agricultural policy makers should pay more attention to non-price policies in the future. Research investments, high yield varieties, yield increasing measures such as irrigation and credit supply facilities should be focused on. Key Words: Supply response, price analysis II
