Cognate words family derived from verb in Turkish

Turkish is in the group of agglutinative languages in terms of structure. Due to this feature, construction and conjugation processes are carried out by adding various suffixes to noun and verb roots. The most commonly used way in Turkish, which has more than one word derivation system, is derivation with construction suffixes. Word derivation with construction suffixes is realized by adding constructional dependent morphemes (construction suffixes) to noun or verb roots. Thus, a new noun or verb is derived from the relevant root that has a meaning relation with it. This word derivation capability of Turkish enables the derivation of a large number of new words from a limited number of roots. Words derived from the same root form "root word families". These word groups are interesting in terms of showing the functionality and power of Turkish word derivation system. In this study, root compound words derived from monosyllabic root verbs (261) in Turkish with verb-noun and verb-verb construction suffixes and families formed from these words were identified. Turkish Dictionary (TDK, 2019) and Derleme Sözlüğü (1993), dialect studies and dictionaries, term dictionaries, related articles and theses, Turkish National Corpus and the internet were scanned and the words derived from these monosyllabic root verbs with construction suffixes were identified and tabulated systematically. Among these words, there are not only those that are found in dictionaries (general, dialectal and term), but also words that are derived from the related root and are determined to be used in written or spoken language, although they are not included in dictionaries. Thus, it was aimed to identify all words derived from the related root. With this study, it was tried to show the functionality and power of the system of word derivation with construction affixes, which is the most important structural feature of Turkish, in Turkish and to provide an idea about the limits of the vocabulary of Turkish.
