The approaches of family institutions and values of university students: Afyon Kocatepe University

The institution of the family has survived until today even if it has undergone changes by being exposed to various interactions since the existence of humanity. In this period that communication and interaction increased, changes in economic, social, political and cultural fields deeply affect the family institution and its values. This study indicate the family value system of young people studying at Afyon Kocatepe University. For this purpose, 322 university students were randomly selected. Marriage, divorce, domestic female-male relationships, elderly care and the value given to the family were demaned to be measured together with some socio-demographic questions. 37.0% of the students participating in the study are male and 63.0% are female students. The data obtained were analyzed. When the views of the young people regarding the determined family values were examined, it was determined that there was a statistically significant difference (P<0.05) between the genders regarding the roles of men and women and care for the elderly. There are also significant differences among other determined variables. In the light of the findings, it can be stated that university students care about the family multidimensionally. In the light of the findings obtanied, the family is valued by universty it is seen as valuable in many aspects. It is seen that university students have the consciousness of maintaining the existence of the family institution and its values in a strong way despite the existence of factors that threat the family and that will unsettle or weaken certain values in the family.
