The relationship between university students' mindfulness, cyber bullying and cyber victimization levels and social media addiction

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between conscious awareness, cyber bullying and cyber victimization levels and social media addiction of individuals who continue their university education. Adolescent and Adult Mindfulness Scale, Social Media Use Disorder Scale, Revised Cyberbullying Inventory for University Students and Personal Information Form were used as data collection tools. The sample of the research; In the 2022–2023 academic year, there were 514 males (51.5%) and 484 females (48.5%) (aged between 17 and 48) studying at different faculties in a province in the Central Anatolia Region (SD = 3.2, M = 22.59). It consists of 998 university students. Findings show that there is a low-level positive significant relationship between Social Media Addiction and Mindfulness (r=.07, p<.05). Additionally, it was determined that there was a low, positive and significant relationship between Social Media Addiction and Cyber Bullying (r=.20, p<.01), and a low, positive and low significant relationship between Cyber Victimization (r=.19, p<.01). ). As a result of the multiple linear regression analysis performed based on the correlation analysis, it was determined that the variables of Conscious Awareness, Cyber Bullying and Cyber Victimization did explain 4% of the variance of Social Media Addiction. Analyzes regarding demographic variables show that social media addiction differs significantly against women (U=111282,000 p<.05) and against social media users (U=10277,00 p<.05) depending on their status of using social media applications. It has been determined that the amount of time spent on the internet and the frequency of people entering social media and visiting social media profiles increases the level of social media addiction. Studies conducted among faculties show that students of the Faculty of Education have a higher level of social media addiction than students in all other types of faculties. Students of the faculty of agriculture are seen to have significantly more social media addiction than students of the faculty of economics and administrative sciences.
