Determination of distance instructors competencies and competency dimensions

In this study, it was aimed to determine distance instructor competencies and dimensions of these competencies by examining the studies on distance learning competencies that existed in the field between 2000 and 2016. For this purpose in the first dimension of the research, competencies for distance teachers have been determined. In the second dimension of the research dimensions for the determined competences were revealed. In the study, one of the qualitative research methods, document analysis, was used. The sample of the research is the articles which is related to the distance learning qualifications in the databases of "Web of Science", "ERIC" and Karadeniz Technical University databases between 2000 and 2016. Key words of "online teaching competency", "online teaching role", "distance instructor competencies", "distance instructor roles", "online instructor competencies" and "online instructor roles" were searched in related databases. Then, the search filters determined by the researcher were applied and the summary and titles of each of the studies were evaluated and documents consisting of 35 articles in total was obtained. The analysis of the collected data was done by using the content analysis method from qualitative data analysis methods. Competency list and competency dimensions were created by analyzing the purpose, context, method and result parts of the articles obtained from the analysis of the document in the analysis stage. The final competency list was created by combining the competency list and competency dimensions determined in the studies. According to the findings obtained from the analyzes made, the obtained competency dimensions are analyzed and 7 different competency dimensions in total, namely "Technological Expertise", "Facilitator", "Evaluation", "Instructional Design", "Social", "Management" and under these dimensions, 62 competency items were obtained. A list of competencies resulting from this study can be used as an evaluation tool for distance teachers.
